The Realm of Creation
A Biblical and Historical Cosmology
A comprehensive overview of the ancient and biblical understanding of the realm — exploring the scriptural and historical basis for a stationary, flat earth enclosed by a solid firmament, the physical and observational evidence that challenges the prevailing heliocentric globe model, and the profound theological and evangelistic implications of the biblical cosmology.

Introduction
The question of the nature of the world we inhabit is one of the most fundamental inquiries of human existence. For millennia, cultures across the globe, grounded in their sacred texts and direct observation, understood the realm as a purposeful, enclosed, and divinely ordered creation. This document provides a comprehensive overview of this ancient and biblical understanding, exploring the scriptural and historical basis for a stationary, flat earth enclosed by a solid firmament.
This work takes seriously the proposition that the modern cosmological consensus is not a settled scientific fact but a philosophical and spiritual worldview, one that stands in direct opposition to the revealed truth of Scripture. It seeks to demonstrate that the biblical model is not an archaic, pre-scientific myth, but a coherent, evidence-based framework that makes the Creator God undeniable — and that the suppression of this truth is not merely academic error, but a matter of profound spiritual consequence.
The Firmament (Raqia): A Solid Dome Above
The Holy Scriptures present a consistent and detailed cosmological model from Genesis to Revelation. This is not a model that requires allegorical reinterpretation to fit modern theories; it is a physical description of the world as the inspired authors understood and observed it. The foundational elements of this biblical cosmology are a fixed, immovable earth, a solid dome-like firmament above, and the waters of the great deep below, with the underworld (Sheol) situated in the heart of the earth.
The central feature of the biblical heavens is the firmament (Hebrew: raqia), a solid, dome-like structure created on the second day of creation to separate the waters above from the waters below (Genesis 1:6-8). The Hebrew root word, raqa, means to beat out or hammer into thin plates, as a metalworker beats gold or bronze into sheets. This linguistic root is unambiguous: the firmament is a solid, physical structure. The heavens are not an infinite vacuum but a tangible barrier.
"Have you with Him spread out the skies, strong as a cast metal mirror?"
— Job 37:18
"Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads... And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire."
— Ezekiel 1:22, 26
"It is I who sit above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in."
— Isaiah 40:22
The Earth: Fixed, Immovable, and Founded
Contrary to the modern model of a spinning, orbiting globe hurtling through space at over 500,000 miles per hour, the Bible repeatedly and emphatically describes the earth as a fixed, stationary object established on foundations. It is the sun that moves, not the earth. This geocentric and stationary model is the consistent testimony of Scripture. The earth is described as a circular plane (Isaiah 40:22, "circle of the earth"), with edges or "ends" (Deuteronomy 13:7; Job 37:3) and "four corners" (Revelation 7:1; Isaiah 11:12). These descriptions make perfect sense for a flat, circular plane but are geometrically impossible for a sphere, which has neither corners nor ends.
| Reference | Text | Cosmological Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Psalm 93:1 | "The world is established; it shall never be moved." | The earth is stable and stationary. |
| Psalm 104:5 | "He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved." | The earth is built on a solid, unmoving base. |
| 1 Chronicles 16:30 | "...the world is firmly established; it shall not be moved." | Reinforces the stability and immobility of the earth. |
| Job 38:4-6 | "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?... On what were its bases sunk?" | God describes the earth as a constructed structure with foundations and bases. |
| Joshua 10:12-13 | "Sun, stand still... and the sun stood still, and the moon stopped..." | It is the sun and moon that move and are commanded to stop, not the earth. |
| Ecclesiastes 1:5 | "The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises." | Describes a geocentric model where the sun circuits the earth. |
| Job 26:7 | "He hangs the earth on nothing." | The earth is suspended in place — not orbiting, but hanging fixed. |
The Waters Above and Below: The Three-Tiered Cosmos
The biblical cosmos is explicitly three-tiered: the heavens above the firmament, the earth and its seas in the middle, and the underworld (Sheol/Hades/the Abyss) below. The "waters above" the firmament (Genesis 1:7) are a literal body of water above the solid dome, explaining the deep blue color of the sky and the source of the great flood, when "the windows of the heavens were opened" (Genesis 7:11). Below the earth lie the "foundations of the deep" (Proverbs 8:28) and the realm of the dead, Sheol, described as being "in the heart of the earth" (Matthew 12:40), "down in the pit" (Ezekiel 31:16), and a place of fire and torment (Luke 16:23-24).
"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork."
Psalm 19:1
